"A Prickly Art":  Homemaking in the Nineteenth Century

Time:  2 pm
Location:  Alumni House, Amherst College
Fee: none

Join Debra Friedman, Head of Interpretation at Old Sturbridge Village and co-editor of Old Sturbridge Village Cookbook, Third Edition (2009), for a lecture on food preparation, household cleanliness, and other needs of a well-run nineteenth-century household. Emily Norcross Dickinson, the poet’s mother, was known for her well-kept home. Her daughter Emily claimed to prefer "pestilence" to housekeeping, but she loved to bake. The Dickinson family at The Evergreens enjoyed a reputation for hospitality.

This lecture will refer to advice books owned and read by the Dickinson family, especially The American Frugal Housewife, by Lydia Maria Child.  A booksigning and refreshments will follow.  A Table for Ten program.

Come learn about early 19th-century cookery as Barbara Hoadley, Historic Deerfield Master Guide and Open Hearth Cook (and guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum), prepares dishes from "receipts" (or recipes) from The American Frugal Housewife, written by Lydia Maria Child in 1828. This cookbook and household advice manual was one of the most widely used and reprinted cookbooks in American culinary history. The cooking demonstration is held in the kitchen of the Hall Tavern building, built in 1786, which is used as Historic Deerfield's Visitor Center. Come experience early American cooking, enjoy the fire, and see some of the dishes being made from this important book.
